Semantics

Paradigmatic/syntagmatic semantics

Explain paradigmatic and syntagmatic semantics

Paradigmatic:
-relations of choice -> members of lexical field
-words can be replaced by other members of the lexical field

Focus: various semantic relations between lexical alternatives

Syntagmatic:
-relation of combination
-which lexical alternative fits best into specific sentence
-example: kill and assassinate

semantic restrictions: restrictions on types of direct objects in combination with particular verbs (again: when to use kill, murder, assassinate)

->kill has less restrictions than murder than assassinate

-> selections restrictions: restrictions on possible combinations of meaning
