  • Emergent and discovery-driven (E&DD) approaches can dress various of the challenges incumbent firms face when developing digital innovation
  • These E&DD approaches can complement traditional practices
    • Particularly important to maintain "project selection" emphasis for more radical innovation projects
  • General warning:
    • Positive effects of implementing E&DD processes and tools are unlikely automatically transferred when firms imitate tools in isolation (e.g., brainstorming without also carefully making trade-offs), nor so does a "by the book" performance of these processes: it is equally important to reflect on what attitudes, behaviors and interests of the individuals performing the processes enables the positive effects (e.g. empathy in "design thinking" is not automatically transferred when reading the report of an ethnographic study).
