Climatology

Chapter 6

How do forest buffer air temperature?

In summer it is cooler, because the leaves absorb the solar radiation leading to less radiation reaching the ground. On larger clearings however, wind blows away the excess heat.

At night, leaves prevent LW Radiation to pass out of the forest, leading to slightly warmer temperatures compared to a clearing.

Smaller clearings are warmer at night than larger clearings, because most longwave radiation comes from the surrounding trees, and trees create higher friction slowing down the wind.
