- empirical evidence however shows that students select what they imitate
- lead to Contrastive Hypothesis: some errors caused by interference from L1 for instance false friends, different adverb position in german (! not possible to fully explain that learners with different L1 make similar errors in L2)
- over-estimation of imitation and therefore disregards other factors (aptitude, insight, motivation, comprehensive educational goals)
